The right information, at the right stage

When this service helps

For commercial and industrial buildings, basements, retaining structures, deeper foundations, residential developments and sites requiring more detailed ground advice.

Clear, agreed outputs

What you receive

Subject to the agreed scope and investigation findings, reporting may address the ground profile, founding conditions, bearing considerations, groundwater observations, excavation considerations and earthworks recommendations. We identify investigation limitations and where further work may be needed.

  1. Agreed field investigation and laboratory results

  2. An interpreted ground model

  3. Advice addressing the agreed foundation, excavation or earthworks questions

Before you begin

Your questions, answered

How many boreholes are needed?

The number, location and depth depend on the site, development, loading and information required. MGS confirms an appropriate investigation scope before fieldwork.

What should I send with my enquiry?

Send your site address, proposed works, available plans or reports, access details and preferred timing. You can enquire before all plans are available.

When can the work be arranged?

Tell us your preferred timing and any access constraints. We’ll confirm the site visit and reporting timeframes for the agreed work before it begins.

An investigation built around your project.

We consider your plans, proposed foundation and excavation depths, available site information and access. The agreed scope may include drilling, sampling, in-situ testing, laboratory testing and engineering interpretation.

Basements and pools

Tell us the proposed excavation depth and provide sections where available. Basement and pool investigations need to reflect the planned works; a standard residential soil report may not provide the information required.

Commercial, industrial and data centres

Discuss your development stage, structural requirements and programme with us. We can prepare a scoped proposal for the required investigation and testing, with specialist input coordinated where needed.

Project-specific pricing

Geotechnical investigations are quoted to suit the scope, depth, testing and reporting requirements. The residential starting offer does not apply to these investigations.

Match the investigation to the design questions

A residential building, commercial development and subdivision can need different ground information. Send the proposed layout, current project stage and questions from the design team so the investigation can be scoped around the decisions it must support.

Available previous reports can help identify what is known and where information is missing. Tell us about planned excavation, earthworks or changes to the proposed development rather than relying on a report title alone to define the work.

From field investigation to a report

Depending on the agreed scope, the work can involve field investigation, soil logging, targeted in-situ testing and laboratory testing. The report brings the observations and results together with interpretation relevant to the proposed works.

Discuss the required deliverables before booking: investigation records, test results and geotechnical considerations should relate to the questions the project team has identified. Further investigation or specialist design may be needed where the available information does not resolve those questions.

Information to send before work is arranged

Provide the site address, available plans and previous ground reports, proposed works, access details and any instructions from your designer or project manager. If the proposal is still developing, explain which decisions need support first.

Confirm the investigation scope, report requirements and timing in the proposal. A site visit is one part of the work; laboratory testing and interpretation, where required, also affect when the agreed report can be completed.

How we work

From enquiry to informed decisions

  1. Share your project

Send your site address, proposed works, available plans and preferred timing.

  2. Confirm the scope

We review the information and provide a fee proposal outlining the agreed investigation and deliverables.

  3. Investigate the site

Once accepted and access is confirmed, we arrange the agreed site work and any required testing.

  4. Receive your report

We provide the agreed findings and recommendations to support your next design or construction decision.
