Footing Probes Melbourne

Understand the foundations you are building around. Targeted footing probes help establish selected existing footing details before an extension, alteration or engineering assessment.

The right information, at the right stage

When this service helps

Your structural engineer may need information about an existing footing's depth, dimensions, construction and supporting ground. We agree probe locations and access around the questions your project needs answered.

Clear, agreed outputs

What you receive

The agreed record or report documents exposed details and relevant site observations. Findings relate to the locations investigated; concealed foundations elsewhere may differ.

  1. Observed footing depth and accessible dimensions

  2. Founding material, photographs and sketches

  3. Exposure limitations and recommended further investigation

Before you begin

Your questions, answered

Will a probe show the whole footing?

Only the exposed parts can be measured directly. A probe beside a wall may not reveal the full width, concealed reinforcement or condition of the entire foundation.

What should I send with my enquiry?

Send existing and proposed plans, your engineer's brief and access details. You can enquire before all plans are available.

When can the work be arranged?

Tell us your preferred timing and any access constraints. We’ll confirm the site visit and reporting timeframes for the agreed work before it begins.

Planning an investigation of existing footings

For an extension or alteration, ask your engineer which existing footing details need to be established. Send available foundation drawings, the proposed layout and the locations of interest. This helps the team choose targeted probe locations rather than assume that one exposure represents the whole building.

Tell us whether the relevant walls are accessible from outside, whether paving or other surfaces are present and whether the property will be occupied. Access and safe exposure affect what can be inspected and should be discussed when the scope is agreed.

Using the findings in your project

The records describe what can be seen and measured at the selected locations, including accessible dimensions and the supporting ground. Share these findings with the engineer responsible for the proposed works so they can consider them alongside the design and other available information.

A targeted footing probe does not expose every foundation or establish all concealed details. If the engineering question remains unanswered because of access, obstructions or conditions encountered, further investigation may need to be scoped. Structural design is separate unless expressly included.

Preparing for a footing probe quote

Include your site address, the purpose of the investigation, available drawings and photographs of the proposed locations. Describe access restrictions and tell us the decision or deadline the findings need to support.

The number of locations, access conditions, extent of exposure and reporting requirements influence the proposal. Confirm the work to surrounding surfaces and any reinstatement responsibilities before booking; do not assume these are the same for every site.

How we work

From enquiry to informed decisions

  1. Share your project

Send your site address, proposed works, available plans and preferred timing.

  2. Confirm the scope

We review the information and provide a fee proposal outlining the agreed investigation and deliverables.

  3. Investigate the site

Once accepted and access is confirmed, we arrange the agreed site work and any required testing.

  4. Receive your report

We provide the agreed findings and recommendations to support your next design or construction decision.
